But… since you’re here looking for safety stuff, here’s some basic camping safety tips that will help you keep it safe next time you’re in the woods!

    • Pick a safe spot: Set up camp on flat, dry ground, away from potential hazards like loose rocks, cliffs, or flood-prone areas. Avoid pitching your tent under dead branches or near wildlife paths.

    • Be weather-smart: Always check the weather forecast before your trip and pack accordingly. Make sure your tent is waterproof, and bring layers of clothing to stay comfortable in changing temperatures.

    • be ready to trench around your tent if necessary.

    • Storm prep: If thunderstorms are expected, avoid setting up camp near tall trees or ridgelines. Seek shelter in a low, sheltered area if the weather worsens.

    • Water safety: Carry enough water or bring a portable water filter or purification tablets to treat water from streams or lakes. Never drink untreated water, as it can carry harmful bacteria and parasites.

    • Food safety: Bring enough non-perishable food, and store it in airtight containers to prevent attracting wildlife. Keep food at least 100 feet from your sleeping area.

    • Fire rule: Always build campfires in designated fire rings or pits (dig one if necessary). Never leave a fire unattended, and make sure it’s completely out before leaving the campsite.

    • To put out a fire, pour water over it, stir the ashes with a stick, and repeat until there is no steam or heat. Use dirt or sand if water is scarce, but make sure the fire is fully extinguished to prevent it from reigniting.

    • Be prepared: Always carry a first-aid kit, a flashlight, a multi-tool, extra batteries, a whistle, and a map. Include any personal medications you may need, and ensure all items are in waterproof containers.

  • NEVER forget the toilet paper!
